This Bulletin discusses the biological control and possible eradication of some exotic sweet potato pests from the Okinawa Islands and other islands south of Kyushu, in the southernmost part of Japan. These islands have already been the site of a successful fruit fly eradication program. However the Bulletin points out that many elements of this successful program are missing from the weevil program, in particular a diet for mass rearing, an effective trap for adults, a practical way of reducing natural populations to manageable levels, and a means of differentiating wild and sterilized adults.
